Help US to help kidz get a full time national KIDZ radio station |
||
|
|
Since May 1999 the Takeover Radio Kidz have been campaigning for a National Kidz Radio Station. We have been to the House of Lords, The Radio Academy, The Houses of Parliament and the Radio Authority to address various committees and groups on Kidz radio in the UK. We have been working with Susan Stranks, one of our patrons. |

|
Susan Stranks Children 2000 campaigner, and former Magpie television presenter has been lobbying the government for many years on the provision of radio for children, we got involved in 1999 and have kept in touch ever since. |

Over the years a number of the crew have spoken to important people to get our message across. James and Deepa, both (11) went to the house of Lords (on their birthdays), Helen (13), James (13) and Andrew (14) spoke at the Radio Academy and Mercedes (12) and Tom (12) carried on the tradition and put their point of view across at Portcullis House to the Government. |

We have meet and impressed lots of important people including, Baroness Warnock, Lady Howe, formerly of the Broadcasting Standards Commission, Philip Willis MP, Lembit Opik MP, Susan Olden, David Benson-Philips, Paul Robinson the boss of Disney UK and many other senior representatives of children's organisations. Lots of people from the radio business have told us that kidz don't want radio we just want to watch television and play computer games. Well where here to tell them they are wrong. |

Neither the BBC nor the independent radio stations are required to give any time to kidz. The BBC run some children's programming on Radio 4 and on its Digital Channels with 'Big Toe and Little Toe'. However, these are shows prepared and presented by adults with some children being 'invited' along. Our campaign is working, the BBC are increasing their children's output and Disney have launched Capital Disney on digital radio but they are all presented by adults and not by Kidz. Is this what we want or what adults think we want, do you think kidz, not adults should be running the programmes? Takeover Radio is all about empowering young people to allow them to 'Take Over' and take control of things. What the experts say! "Experts confirm that listening is crucial to early development and that radio can help children to acquire their basic listening skills".
Susan Stranks says " the
policy makers need convincing, a Professionally evaluated trial will
reinforce our case". She has endorsements from hundreds of MP's,
Peers, leading educators and child care consultants for the
reinstitution of children's radio.
What Deepa had to say! In 2001 Takeover Radio started an Internet radio station so we could broadcasting for 3 hours a week, this was such a great success that the Radio Authority asked Takeover Radio to be one of the stations to take part in it's Access Radio project to test community radio. We are now the first and only full time Children's radio station in the UK and the one year trial was extended for another three years, we have now been granted a 5 year community radio licence. In May 2003, we published the first copy of our magazine, 'Re-Tune'. As some of our members wanted to move from the spoken word to the written word. It was a great success and in November 2003 we have launched it as a quarterly magazine distributed to 10,000 school children in the Leicester area. Are next step is to set up cells around the country offering the same opportunities we have received so even more children can take part.
What Tom had to say! If you agree with Deepa, Tom and the rest of the crew and would like to help spread Kidz radio across the UK, Contact us Children's Radio - An opportunity lost? A Duty ignored ? We've . Been .Taken.Over and YOU'RE NEXT!
