CHILDREN 2000 NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR CHILDREN RADIO

The Kidz Interviewing Susan!
Susan being interviewed by Deepa and Georgina.

Susan Stranks has been campaigning for several years for increased access to the airwaves for children. The former TV presenter of "Magpie" started her Campaign calling for the last remaining national radio frequency 225mhz Long Wave to be given over to children's broadcasting.

She frequently appears in the pages of radio industry journals and national newspapers debating the issues. Susan has collected high profile support for her cause, including a 3 year working relationship with Takeover Radio including inviting Deepa and James Deness to make their historic speech at the House of Lords Committee on Children's Radio.

Susan knows, as we do that kids DO like radio, and that if its presented well, and has stuff in it we like, than we will listen to it. She argues that the BBC ( who dropped their programming for kids ) and other radio stations don't even realise that we kids exist and even the Radio Authority says only listeners above 15 count in listening figures.

Takeover Radio has already proved different; that kids not only like radio but also can actually do it themselves, for their own age group. Susan is always defending the fact that kids should be given the chance to join in with the radio stations in Britain, and that companies should take notice of what we think and like to hear.

From doing Takeover Radio we know that so many companies huge and small together spend millions trying to persuade us ( and our parents ) to buy their products, food, clothes, drinks, school stuff, holidays, mobile phones..well, anything really...and we are the customers not only now but in the future.

In America there are lots of really BIG radio stations catering for kids, yet in Britain there are none at all. Susan is the Champion of Children's Radio in Britain. and WE are the troops !!!

Susan is based in Brighton by the sea, and Deepa and Georgina went down to see her recently for another interview about her cause. We support Susan's Campaign, and one day perhaps more stations will get Taken Over by children, producing and presenting the stuff they like.

The troops are moving on, in March 2002 Takeover Radio took to the air wave across Leicester with the first ever full time children's radio station presented by and for kidz. It is part of the Radio Authorities trial for Access Radio across the UK, the scheme has been extended to 31st December 2004 and will become permanent later that year.

Resistance is futile. you WILL be taken over !
